Close by Aberdeen and on Scotland’s famous castle and whisky trails, it’s a magical 16th Century Turreted Castle with resident ghost, the Green Lady. Extraordinary interiors, fine antiques and painted ceilings, as well as wonderful grounds and its famous walled garden.
You will find a labyrinth of cultural history here. The Burnett family lived in the castle for over 350 years and turrets and towers, winding staircases, ornate ceilings and ancient sculpted yew trees combine to make a visit to Crathes Castle, Garden and Estate a great day out for the whole family.
One of the best features of the castle is the grounds. The walled garden is a magical jungle of history with 8 different sections and an abundance of exotic blooms and something of interest throughout the seasons. Crathes also holds one of just two National Collections of the rare Malmaison Carnation. As well as the walled garden there are many marked trails through the estate and an abundance of wildlife.
Start Time: 09:00am
Duration: 10 Hrs
You leave Aberdeen in the morning and arrive in Royal Deeside, one of the favourite holiday locations of the British Royal Family. At the Cambus O’May forest, you can walk in the woods and re-energise in the pristine environment that makes this area such a draw for Queens and Princes.
Invigorated by the walk, we head deeper into the national park, as you travel past Cockbridge and Tomintoul. This legendary stretch of road regularly sees the first of the snowy winter weather and crosses the mountain pass known locally as the Lecht. You’ll have plenty of time for photo opportunities on this unforgettable route.
Then we delve into the home of whisky, the Speyside region. Here, we stop at the Speyside Cooperage where you get to know the history of Scotland’s oak casks. Next, we head to one of the Speyside towns for lunch before we enjoy a visit to the Strathisla distillery.
This iconic distillery with a pagoda shaped roof is the oldest in the Highlands. And it was where the story of the Chivas Brothers started. Savour this excellent single malt and learn about its relationship with famous Chivas Regal blends.
You leave Strathisla full of appreciation for whisky and arrive in Aberdeen in the early evening. It’s now up to you whether you continue the whisky tasting into the night.
