Our journey begins as we depart London Euston by train and head northwards to the market town of Penrith in Cumbria. Here you have the chance to explore the 14th century Penrith Castle and take a walk around the ruins before lunch. In the afternoon our travels take us to the Lake District National Park, which was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017. We will stop at the shores of Ullswater for some free time. Consider walking from this stunning location through the forests to discover the awe-inspiring Aira Force waterfall.
Our next stop will be in Castelrigg to discover the myths and legends of the pre-historic standing stones. Onwards to Keswick for some time to explore this market town set in the shadows of the mighty Skiddaw and our home for the next two nights. Overnight in Keswick.
Please Note: During July / early August this tour may stay in Windermere.
After breakfast, this morning brings a final opportunity to enjoy the views of Ullswater as we traverse south, over the narrow Kirkstone Pass towards the enchanting Lake Windermere. Perhaps take the leisurely option of a cruise across the lake or remain land-bound and have lunch surrounded by the stunning scenery. This afternoon we visit Coniston Water and the pretty village of Hawkshead. Famous for its literary connection with William Wordsworth who once described Hawkshead as the ‘loveliest spot that man hath found’. Discover Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage or perhaps experience the peace and tranquillity of the Daffodil Garden on the banks of the River Rothay. Afterwards we journey back to Keswick. Overnight in Keswick.
After breakfast, we get off to a spectacular start thanks to the dramatic panoramas in store at the Whinlatter Forest Park. Journeying our way through winding lanes along the shorelines of Crummock Water and Buttermere towards Honister Mountain Pass. This really is some of the best scenery that the Lake District has to offer – it is no wonder it inspired so many literary greats. Next there is the possibility to discover the stories at Honister Slate Mine, a working mine where local Cambrian’s continue to make their living. Enjoy refreshments before our journey continues through the forests of Borrowdale with a quick stop at Derwent Water and free time for lunch and shopping. After lunch our journey ends back at Penrith Station for the last part of our trip back to London.
