Copenhagen
Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen is situated on the coastal islands of Zealand and Amager. In the city's historic centre one can visit Frederiksstaden, an 18th Century Rococo district, home to the Royal family’s Amalienborg Palace. Located nearby are Christiansborg Palace and the Renaissance-era Rosenborg Castle built by Christian IV and surrounded by gardens. The lavish interior is home to the Royal Crown Jewels as well as historic tapestries and a collection of 17th Century Venetian glass. Situated on the Islet of Slotsholmen, the Christiansborg Palace contains Denmark’s Supreme Court, the Prime Minister’s office and the Danish Parliament.
Nyhavn (New Harbour in English), the historic waterfront area is located next to a 17th Century canal where old wooden ships are still moored. With its tall painted houses dating back to the 1600 and 1700s this is a vibrant hub that houses outdoor cafés, bars and restaurants. A place to sit and relax, sip on a beer in summer and be seen.
The city has other iconic sites that can be seen on a canal tour when the weather is pleasant. Join the tour in either Nyhavn or near Christiansborg and sail past the Little Mermaid sitting on her rock, the Opera House, charming old buildings and the Black Diamond Library.
Vesterbro is a popular neighbourhood full of trendy nightlife and fashion boutiques. Its claim to fame used to be the red light district but now houses modern family living.
Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens is the world’s oldest theme park and if you are taking your children then they will have the time of their lives on the numerous rides.
Strøget is the main pedestrian street for that high street and high end shopping experience. It is amongst the largest pedestrian malls in the world and the prices aren’t for the faint hearted.
Nationalmuseet is Copenhagen’s National Museum, a place where you could lose yourself in, without realising it. It has a remarkable wealth of artefacts from all of Denmark’s past.
Why not come and enjoy Copenhagen and everything it has to offer as this is one cosy Nordic capital.
