Whether you’re craving sun and sea, powdery snow, or a peaceful, crowd-free getaway, you will find your own perfect time to visit Slovenia.
Today, we’d love to share our favourite seasons here – summer and winter – in this small but mighty country.
Slovenia in Summer: June – August
In summer, in only one day you can swim in the Adriatic Sea in the morning and hike in the Slovenian Alps in the afternoon, with a visit in the second largest cave in the world in between.
The Slovenian Alps
The Slovenian Alps are actually called The Julian Alps – this is a gorgeous mountain range of the Southern Limestone Alps that stretch from northeastern Italy to Slovenia, where they rise to 2,864 metres at Mount Triglav, the highest peak in Slovenia.
Put on your hiking shoes and explore the treasure trove of natural beauty in the Julian Alps, including Lake Bohinj, the idyllic Lake Bled and the vineyard hills of Brda.
Ljubljana Summer Experiences
Summer days in Ljubljana are just ideal for enjoying the day in one of the city’s outdoor cafes, exploring numerous nature paths in and around Ljubljana, taking a swim or even learning how to sup on Ljubljanica river. On top of that, a number of interesting festivals take place. A lot of them are free and happen outdoors.
Magnificent Ljubljana Castle
Magnificent Ljubljana Castle is dominating the summer skyline of Ljubljana – the site of several former defensive buildings in a hilly area of land stretching away to the south of the Old Town.
The Ljubljana Castle, Funicular Railway and Castle Coffee House open from 10am till 11pm from June till September – longest working hours of the year.
Postojna Cave Adventure
Visit Postojna Cave – a 24,340 metres long cave system near Postojna, southwestern Slovenia. Just like Indiana Jones, you can embark on an exciting adventure in the underground world and discover its many wonders – this is an attractive destination for families.
Take a look at the timetables of all the cave sights and plan your day the way it suits you best.
Amazing Castle Stay
In summer, it’s a perfect time for a castle stay. The Otočec castle hotel is set on an islet in the middle of the Krka river. Having played host to a multitude of important guests over its history, including Prince Albert II of Monaco and Pierce Brosnan, the service is immaculate and the Grad Otocec is home to the most atmospheric restaurant in the region. Be sure to explore the natural hot springs in the surrounding primeval forest before treating yourself to a special bottle from the hotel’s extensive wine cellar.
Slovenia in Winter: December – February
Skiing! Skiing! Skiing!
Winter in Slovenia is as exciting as summer and comes with its own perks. Skiing here is definitely one of the top things to do. Slovenia’s resorts offer all the facilities you need with access to the all-levels slopes, whether you are a first timer looking to learn the ropes or a more accomplished skier intent on really challenging yourself.
Relaxing Natural Spas
However, if skiing, snowboarding, ski jumping and other snow related activities aren’t your cup of tea but you prefer peace and quiet, winter is still your season – less crowds around your favourite sightseeing and, of course, some of the best spas in Europe. Or shall we say, termes as they are called here, think bubbling pools of healing thermal water. Slovenia has 15 certified natural spas, both indoor and out, plus specialised health and beauty treatments.
Crazy Photogenic Winter Ljubljana
And if you are an avid travel photographer, winter in Slovenia is a picture perfect, no doubt. Start your photo adventure in Ljubljana enjoying its twinkling fairy lights bringing festive cheer to the streets and riverside. In the midst of this magical setting, a Christmas market lies alongside the Ljubljanica River, where each stall is laden with local handicrafts and seasonal food, with the aroma of spiced mulled wine and roast chestnuts permeating the air. Can you feel magic in the air?
In winter, Lake Bled continually proves its popularity among visitors to Slovenia. With less crowds and a completely different scenery, a visit to the mountains will leave you speechless during the colder months. Whenever you decide to visit Slovenia you’ll be amazed.
