Ancient, Royal and Recent History of Phnom Penh Tour
Start Time: 08:00am
Duration: 4 Hrs

Home to about 1.5 million people, Phnom Penh has been Cambodia’s capital since French colonisation of the country. Located on the banks of the Tonle Sap and Mekong River, Phnom Penh was once known as the “Pearl of Asia”, one of the loveliest French built cities in Indochina. Spend a half day exploring some of the key attractions in this charming city, which boasts a rich blend of Khmer and colonial architecture. Explore the hillside Wat Phnom with its big trees and mischievous monkeys and hear about the legend of Lady Penh, the founder of the city. We then visit the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, two of the most striking buildings in the capital and considered as some of the finest examples of Khmer architecture. At the Silver Pagoda, notice the small green crystal Buddha (the “Emerald Buddha”) and a life sized solid gold Buddha, which weighs 90kg and is adorned with 2086 diamonds and the National Museum, designed in Khmer style by a French archaeologist and painter in 1917. The museum’s collection includes over 14,000 items, making it one of the world’s largest collections of Khmer art including sculptural, ceramics, bronzes and ethnographic objects. You will then return to your hotel.

Visit to Phnom Oudong
Departure: 13:00pm
Duration: 4 Hrs

Explore the historic sites in Oudong, the capital of Cambodia between 1618 and 1866 and home to impressive Khmer architecture reflecting the glory days of Cambodia. Located about a 1 Hr drive from Phnom Penh, Oudong features ruins sprinkled across two ridges. The smaller of the two ridges has two ruined buildings, several stupas and the Ta San Mosque, still used by the Jahed sect of Cambodia’s Cham Muslims. Explore the surrounding smaller pagodas, stupas and Buddha statues. Climb the stairway to the top and enjoy panoramic views over the surrounding countryside featuring innumerable sugar palm trees. Later, we drive back to Phnom Penh and your hotel.

Cold Towels and Water will be supplied during the tour.

After breakfast at your hotel, you will be met and transferred to the Airport for your onward journey or departure flight home.

Experience Local Life on Silk Island

Leaving the bustle of the city behind, we will take you to the shores of the Mekong to spend a day on Silk Island, nestled 30 minutes from the banks of Phnom Penh. Though it is just a short hop from the busy capital, this island is your typical Cambodian rural village with dirt roads and ox carts roaming around. This tour will showcase the very best of this quaint, charming island. Get ready to embark on a journey of history, philanthropy and of course, food. Try your hand at making your own noodles with a local lady who spent all of her life perfecting this very intricate art. You will also have the opportunity to learn how to make your own hammock or even engage with the local monks at the island’s beautifully intrinsic pagoda.

Khmer Rouge Refugee Stories with Youk Chhang

Meet up with Youk Chhang over high tea at the colonial Raffles Hotel Le Royal. Youk Chhang is the Executive Director of the Documentation Centre of Cambodia (DC-Cam) and a survivor of the Khmer Rouge’s “Killing Fields” era, which dominated the country between 1975 and 1979. Named one of the TIME magazine’s “60 Asian heroes” in 2006 and one of the “Time 100” most influential people in the world in 2007 for his stand against impunity in Cambodia and elsewhere, this exclusive encounter brings you face-to-face with this strong survivor as he recounts his hardships and how he overcame the devastating regime. Learn about Chhang’s own personal experiences during the Khmer Rouge and its killing machine and how he escaped to freedom by moving to the United States as a Cambodian refugee.

Phnom Penh Urban Exploration by Cyclo

Sit back and relax as you are carted through the streets of Phnom Penh by cyclo, a traditional mode of transportation across Southeast Asia. Enjoy riding through the city’s streets where you will have the opportunity to admire the mix of Khmer and French colonial architecture. Unearth the history within the city’s abandoned facades, exploring Churches and Chinese Temples hidden down Phnom Penh’s narrow alleyways. More than just an architecture tour, this is an urban exploration of the city that was once known as “the Pearl of Asia”. Through the eyes of our guide who is passionate about his country’s turbulent history and unique blend of cultural influences, he will lead you around the capital offering insider information and facts rarely known.

Visa Requirements:
A tourist visa should be obtained in advance. It is not possible to get Visa upon arrival.
Please ensure your passport is valid more than 6 months from the date of return for every country you are visiting. Please also ensure there is sufficient space in your passport to allow for all immigration procedures, taking note that some South East Asian countries take up a full page for the visa sticker and need yet more space on a separate page for entry and exit stamps.
Please contact Europe Holidays for any visa service or guidance. Please note the following general information is subject to change concerning visas.

Trip and Travel Insurance:
The tour price does not include personal insurance. Travellers are highly recommended to purchase Travel Insurance upon commitment of the booking. Europe Holidays can assist with all your travel requirements.

Travel Advice for New Year:
The dates of travel for this booking fall during Chaul Chnam Thmey, the Cambodian New Year (Apr 13 – 17, 2022).
In Cambodia, many shops, restaurants and businesses are closed during this period or may operate on a limited schedule. Departing Phnom Penh or Siem Reap by road may be difficult during this period since many locals will travel over the holiday as well.
Flying between cities should be fine, although please allow for some delays and more traffic than usual. Local attractions in the countryside in and around Phnom Penh will be crowded with domestic visitors, who usually travel with their entire family. It is recommended that during the Khmer New Year period, smaller local attractions like streams, waterfalls and parks are avoided as they will be very overcrowded with locals on holiday.
