It’s time to feel the lovely sea breeze from the Atlantic! Today, you begin cycling toward the Atlantic, guided by fresh sea air and everchanging Coastal scenery. The ride starts in Porto, crossing the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge, where wide views over the Douro River provide a memorable introduction to the day. Leaving the City behind, the route follows calm roads and dedicated cycling paths close to the ocean, creating a relaxed and enjoyable first riding experience. Along the Coastline, you pass a series of inviting beaches including Valadares, Francelos and Miramar Beach, all connected by quiet seaside paths. Although Atlantic Waters are often refreshing, these beaches are ideal for short stops, seaside walks or moments spent enjoying the Coastal light and open views. Today’s ride leads away from the open Atlantic and into the quieter, more intricate landscapes of the Ria de Aveiro, revealing one of Portugal’s most distinctive natural environments. Departing from Furadouro, the route gradually leaves the Coastal setting behind and enters the marshlands of the Ria through some of its least explored areas. Leaving Aveiro, the route follows quiet paths through an area of shallow ponds and salt pans, where salt is still harvested using traditional methods passed down through generations. This working landscape reflects a way of life closely connected to the lagoon and its natural rhythms. Continuing onward, the route reaches a small dock area offering views over the Harbour and a glimpse of traditional Cod fishing boats, a reminder of Portugal’s long Maritime history. Crossing the main Bridge, you arrive in Praia da Barra, a Coastal Village known for its open horizons and strong Atlantic presence. Departing from Praia da Mira, the route initially follows sections of the Ria de Aveiro, where water channels and open landscapes continue to shape the scenery. As the day unfolds, the environment gradually changes, giving way to small Villages that reflect a simple and traditional rural way of life. Further along the route, you pass through Cantanhede, a recognised Wine producing area where vineyards and agricultural land add another layer to the landscape. From here, the ride begins to follow the course of the Mondego River, whose calm waters accompany you toward your destination. Approaching Coimbra, the scenery becomes increasingly defined by history. Once the Medieval Capital of Portugal, Coimbra is best known for its University, the oldest in the country and among the oldest in Europe. The University of Coimbra and its surrounding historic areas are recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, reflecting centuries of Academic, Cultural and Architectural significance. Leaving Coimbra, the route gradually moves away from the City’s Historic Centre and settles into a quieter rhythm along the Riverbanks. Shaded paths, open views and the steady presence of the Mondego define the early part of the ride, with occasional sightings of traditional fishing boats and small Riverside Communities that remain closely tied to the water. Further downstream, the distinctive silhouette of Montemor-o-Velho Castle rises above the floodplains.
