Upon arrival at Athens Airport, you will be welcomed by an assistant and transferred to the hotel. The rest of the day is free at leisure. Overnight stay in Athens.
Today, is dedicated to exploring the City of Athens. We begin with a panoramic tour to the most important monuments and landmarks of the city including the Panathinaikos Stadium, the Zappeion, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Hadrian's Arch, Syntagma Square, the Parliament, the Tomb of the Unknown soldier, Schliemann's House, the Academy, the University, the National Library, and the Old Parliament. Afterwards, we head for a guided visit to the Acropolis, as well as the Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Parthenon and the Erechtheion. Later, we continue with a guided visit to the Acropolis Museum, which was voted one of the best museums in the world. After breakfast at the hotel, we depart towards the Peloponnese. Our first stop will be at the impressive Corinth Canal before continuing to Epidaurus to visit its theatre, famous for its acoustics. We then continue to Nafplion for a shortstop before visiting Mycenae, 'rich in gold' as Homer mentions, with the Cyclopean Walls and the Tomb of Agamemnon with the famous Lion's Gate. This afternoon, we will cross the mountains of the Peloponnese arriving in Olympia for dinner and our overnight stay. Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Built on the banks of the River Alfeios, Olympia is beautiful, green, and placid. Today, enjoy a tour through the remains of the Ancient Olympia Complex (home of the original Olympic Games), including the Temple of Zeus, the Palaestra, and Phidias's Workshop. Afterwards, we will continue to the local museum, which is one of the richest in Greece, to see the impressive Statue of Hermes of Praxiteles. This afternoon, we will start heading north, driving around Patras, over the impressive Rio-Antirrio Bridge, through Nafpaktos and Itea, to Delphi for dinner and our overnight stay. Delphi used to be the most sacred spot in the world and a pilgrimage centre for many centuries in the antiquity. Here, admire the Sanctuary of Apollo, walk the Sacred Way, and visit the Temple of Apollo, home of Pythia (the Oracle). Our journey continues to the local museum with the famous Bronze Statue of the Charioteer. In the afternoon we will be crossing the mountains of central Greece to arrive in Kalambaka for dinner and our overnight stay. Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
This morning, we will depart our hotel to visit Meteora. These amazing rock formations are like towers of sandstone, standing ageless, and have provided a sacred retreat for monks over the centuries. A number of Monasteries are hidden on top of Meteora and the view over the plain is breathtaking. Meteora is considered among the most beautiful areas of mainland Greece and belongs to UNESCO's List of World Heritage Monuments. We continue our journey north, through the striking plain of Thessaly and the Valley of Tempi. This way leads under the impressive Mount Olympus, home of the 12 Gods in Greek Mythology, and on to Thessaloniki the Capital of Northern Greece for dinner and our overnight stay. This morning is dedicated to exploring the City of Thessaloniki. Today, we will visit the most important landmarks and monuments of the city and embrace its glorious Byzantine past. Enjoy visits to its characteristic Churches and the Museum of Byzantine culture. The remainder of the afternoon will be at leisure to explore more of the city on your own. Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Today we will be exploring the historical places of Macedonia. Our first stop will be to the town of Edessa to visit its beautiful waterfalls. Afterwards, we will visit the Aristotle's School where the great philosopher taught the 'doctrines of morals and politics' to Alexander the Great. We then continue to Vergina to see the Royal Tombs of Macedonia, including King Phillip II who was the father of Alexander the Great. Our last stop for today will be to Veria to visit the Bema of St. Paul, the colourful market, and the Jewish neighbourhood. Our journey returns to Thessaloniki for dinner and our overnight stay. Today, our exploration of Macedonian history continues on our journey to Athens. Our first stop along the way is to Pella, which is the Ancient Capital of Macedonia and birthplace of Alexander the Great. Enjoy a visit to the site with the exquisite floor mosaics and the new local museum. We then continue our drive to the Archaeological Park of Dion, which was the sacred place of Ancient Macedonia at the foot of Mount Olympus. Afterwards, we continue our drive to Athens, with a photo stop at Thermopylae and the Statue of Leonidas, before arriving in the evening in our overnight stay. Meals: Breakfast
